Blog post #4 - Monday Morning Moment

“Some individuals, through what flowed from them, have left a mark on their age lasting through generations and working for good.” Goethe.
Ah yes! This great gal was such an individual.

At the weekend I did my first choral workshop since silly old Covid. The place was packed with singers, mostly like me, “of an age,” trying to crank up their voices after the rust, the long Covid, or simply wear and tear that comes to our bodies (and voices therefore) over the years.
There had been a last minute venue switch and we ended up in the Flockhart Hall at MLC.

As those voices, collectively raised in song, raised the bar of clarity, tone and range, I felt a growing awareness of gratitude to Jo. Imagine the intake of breath when I shared with them the fact that all this tweaking which was going on, came from the research that great lady did against all the odds and that I encountered her in that very room way back in 1997!

It was such a special moment. The meeting of Jo herself, who was pretty elderly and very scary by that time, and the treasure of collective realisation right there, right then on that sunny Saturday afternoon.
Everything took off for me when I embraced and studied the findings of Jo’s vast research and gained confidence in what I was doing as a singer and teacher. So, yes, this morning I’m feeling so very grateful to that dogged pioneer and incredible human being, dear Jo Estill.
And thanks to Dianne Vale; MD - Joseph Hie and The Star Chorale for coming out to play with me and well yes, with Jo too.
Love to all and have a wonderful week. Kxx

There were stars a-plenty on Saturday afternoon in the superbly appointed rehearsal room at MLC- Jo Estill herself, of course being No 1. But our star, Kate, was masterly in the way she presented the essence of Estill’s method, working closely to the music chosen by Star’s new Music Director, the talented young Joseph Hie.

The singers of Star Chorale and their guests from the Lyceum Choir responded with concentration and flexibility. The group excitement and satisfaction with vocal improvements in quality of tone, matching of vowels and security of attack was palpable in the room as we finished up.

All good wishes to Star Chorale under the baton of Joseph Hie as they jet off to New York and Carnegie Hall to participate in a great SingFest later this year.

CONGRATULATIONS to Choir Manager, Dianne Vale, for organising the workshop and for enabling the Chorale to travel. And thank you, Kate, for working your magic once again.

Thank you for your kind words Judy.
It was such a special day for me and being in the very room I first learnt some of those singing skills from Jo herself, was a gorgeous twist of fate.
Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

I really enjoyed this reflection on simplicity and the creative process. It’s so easy to get caught up in overthinking and complexity, but your reminder to keep things simple and focus on what truly matters felt very grounding. I can see how taking a moment like this on a Monday really sets a positive tone for the rest of the week. Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful start to the day!
